       Kashmiri  embroidery  includes  a  variety  of  styles,   to create the base for the embroidery; this craft is known

       Sozni
       •  A sophisticated needle embroidery that uses fine silk
          or cotton threads.

       •  The Islamic saint Shah Hamdan introduced this style
          in the 14th century.
       •  Motifs are embroidered onto a fabric base.
       •  Done using a needle, “Sozni” is worked on Pashmina
          shawls, woolen shawls, jackets, salwar kameez and
          sarees. Work done on pashmina is comparatively
          much finer (picture below) than other fabrics (cotton,
          silk and wool). (Fig 1)

       Paper  mache  sozni  is  a  Kashmiri  craft  of  hand-
       embroidered  paper  mache  on  pashmina  shawls  and
       stoles. The art of paper mache has been practiced in
       Kashmir for centuries. “Paper mache embroidery,” also
       sometimes called “papier mache embroidery,” refers
       to a unique style of embroidery primarily practiced in
       the  Kashmir  region  of  India,  where  intricate  designs   •  Tilla embroidery
